Lathyrus sativus (scientific name: Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC.var. utilise (Wall. Ex Wight) Baker ex Burck) is a plant of the genus Lathyrus in the legume family. Annual twining vines. Branches slightly spreading sparsely pilose. Compound leaves pinnate with 3 leaflets; Leaflets 6 -- 15 cm long or more, 4.5 -- 10 cm wide. Racemes pendulous, 12-30 cm long, with more than 10-20 flowers. Pod 8 -- 12 cm long and 18 -- 20 mm wide; Seeds 6-8, pale yellow-white. Flowering in October, fruit in November.
Function:
1. It act as precursor of the neural transmitter dopamine.
2. It causes significant effect on glucose metabolism and arterial blood pressure.
3. It functions to activate depressor neurons in the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) and caudal ventrolateral medulla (CVLM).
4. It plays major roles as a neurotransmitter for baroreceptor reflex and blood pressure regulation.
5. It reduces body fat and decreases cellulite.
